Fun Senior Session

March 19th, 2009

There are so many great locations in Kansas City to take senior portraits, we just shot some great stuff at Hi Hat Coffee in Westwood Kansas and then at a few spots around the Country Club Plaza.  Senior portrait sessions should be really fun, we take our time and do a lot of different outfits and locations.

Here are a few images….

How to get great senior portraits in Kansas City.

Lighting is really important when looking for great places to shoot, I only use direct sunlight when its backlighting the subject, Soft directional light is great on the face, it really makes the eyes look bright and alive.  Another great way to make the eyes pop is to choose clothing that matches the subjects eyes.

RED.com RED ONE CAMERA

November 16th, 2008

We are excited about shooting with a really cool new tool, the RED ONE digital cinema camera.  From now on our film and video production projects will be produced in super high def using the red camera and final cut pro from apple.  here is some more information about the red camera from the RED website, www.red.com

The RED ONE™ body – designed for flexibility and functionality. Weighing in at 10 lbs, this is a streamlined package specifically designed to maximize your shooting options. Matched with a 35mm PL lens mount, it allows you to take advantage of the world’s finest optics. Modular and upgradeable, the RED ONE™ camera is a future-proof acquisition system you can build upon. RED ONE™’s modular design means you can upgrade with us as we add new features and accessories, as well as benefitting from performance improvements with each new free firmware upgrade.

Typical high-end HD camcorders have 2.1M pixel sensors and record with 3:1:1 color sub-sampled video at up to 30fps. RED offers the Mysterium ™ Super 35mm cine sized (24.4×13.7mm) sensor, which provides 4K (up to 30 fps), 3K (up to 60 fps) and 2K (up to 120 fps) capture, and all this with wide dynamic range and color space in 12 bit native RAW. At 4K, that’s more than 5 times the amount of information available every second and a vastly superior recording quality. In addition, you get the same breathtaking Depth of Field and selective focus as found in film cameras using equivalent 35mm P/L mount lenses. Mysterium ™ boasts greater than 66db Dynamic Range thanks to its large 29 sq. micron pixels. And 12,065,000 pixels deliver resolution that can only be called Ultra High Definition.

Shoot lightweight EFP style (body around 10 lbs., in rugged aluminum alloy) or load it up to shoot a feature film. Options include RED-RAIL™ mounting accessories that “grow” the camera body. Configure for tripod, crane or long lens applications. High-resolution RED LCD and EVF monitors come equipped with advanced tools for framing, exposure and focus. The RED ONE™ body and RED-RAIL components provide numerous mounting points to allow hundreds of optional RED and third party accessories… some that haven’t even been dreamed of yet. Choose between the convenience and durability of recording directly to Compact Flash, in-camera, or outputting signal to RED FLASH DRIVE or RED DRIVE (RAID) for even longer recording options.

The Photo Moms

November 6th, 2008

I just had a disturbing conversation with someone at my church who is a stay at home mom with a passion for photography. She was telling me that she went to a professional photographers meeting / seminar wanting to learn more about the art and business of photography but instead heard all about how much “professional photographers” feel threatened by people like her. She told me that 80% of the photographers who got up to talk went on and on about how their studios are suffering because of all the moms at home with digital cameras. I can’t believe these people feel this way, maybe instead of feeling threatened, how about taking it as a challenge to step up and do something amazing. I know lots of my clients are amature photographers but they still come to me for portraits, I find it totally inspiring, its really motivating knowing that I need to come up with something new, different and exciting for them every time. I am thinking about starting a monthly class for moms with camera’s who are excited about learning more about getting great portraits on their own. Its fantastic what you can create with a little knowledge and some natural light.

Let me know if you are interested…

Aerial Art vs. Aerial Photography

Aerial Art is much more fun to shoot then just plain aerial photographs, its much more of a challenge to hang outside your helicopter looking for shapes and lines and interesting composition in the landscape below.  Of course where you shoot makes a huge difference in the images you can capture.  Check out some of my images of Kansas City on my site kcaerialart.com  for some really amazing , inspirational aerial art photographers check out these links.

Man Its Christmas Music Video

November 4th, 2008

Just finished editing the Jimmie Bratcher music video, Man Its Christmas, shot on the RED ONE camera on the Country Club Plaza in Kansas City Mo.

Check it out…

man its christmas

Because we receive 10 - 15 emails a week from people looking for photography internships, this category will be some of my thoughts and feelings about the business of photography.

Its so important to first be REAL with people, you must love what you do and have a passion for the art of photography, its so much fun meeting new people and getting a glimpse into the lives and relationships of the people we photograph.  When we as photographers can make people feel comfortable and have fun, the end result will be so much better.

To be RELEVANT simply means creating images that can stand the test of time. Do the portraits I create say something about the person I am photographing? We must do more then learn a trade, we have to keep learning all the time, read books and magazines to stay inspired, experiment with new ideas. Do a session every month just for your own portfolio and do something different from what you are doing every day.

REVOLUTIONARY is the big one. When someone does something amazing, people talk about it. The best advertising is most often time free, so do something different and people will talk about you…. do portraits underwater or in a dark alley downtown, or photograph dancers or musicians or babies dressed up in flower pots!  The point is if you can do something different or amazing, people will talk, and that in the end is what makes any business a success!!

Today I was given the honor of photographing both of the cutest babies in New York City!!  My wife Sandra and I photographed Dashiell and Declan, 9 month old twins!

super cute twin baby boys

All of the images were taken on-location just using the natural window light.  its amazing how the simplest lighting can sometimes be the most beautiful.  it helps when the subjects are happy and having fun too!

happy declan laying on a pillow smiling

Sessions like this are so natural, the babies are in their own home doing things they have done before…. I think it makes it easy to just be in the moment and capture that. Most of the time great images just happen, they are not overly planned or posed, you just have to wait for the right moment to occur and then be ready to take the picture.

Well of course being on the 28th floor they had a pretty great view of New York City, almost like shooting aerial photographs… :)

What does it take to get great portraits?  I think the most important things to consider are the subject, location, lighting, clothing, styling and posing.

Of course the subject makes all the difference, its hard to go wrong with cute little kids but just about everyone can look great on camera,  its more about making people feel comfortable and choosing angles and clothing that is complimentary. Almost everyone looks great in dark solids!

Location is hugh, most great looking movies are shot in great locations, portraits taken on the beach in the bahamas will look different then ones taken near a strip mall!  the location can set the tone for the shoot and for the finished look, go find a location that will make your portraits look amazing!

Lighting is almost everything!  Direct or harsh light is only good as backlight or when going for a really hard feeling. Most portraits look far better in soft directional light that is stronger from the side or front then from the top.  When I shoot outdoors I first find spots with great natural light, and then work from there.  I look for places where my subject is in the shade but where the direct sunlight is striking a near by building or anything that is light enough to bounce some directional light onto my subject.  In the studio I bounce my strobe off of walls behind or to the side of me.

Clothing is easy, if you don’t want to notice it wear something dark, the human eye is drawn to things that are bright and / or sharp.  If your going for a “look” try to match the backgrounds / locations with colors that compliment the clothes… this should all compliment the subjects eye color!!

Styling is one of the most important parts of a fashion or magazine shoot,  most portrait photographers don’t have a stylist  or make-up artist along for every shoot so its important to carry at least a little powder, shine on the face can ruin almost any great shot.

Posing is one of the more challenging variables, of course it works best to only shoot professional models and let them move and do what they do.  But for the rest of the real people in the world some direction is needed.  Most important, think COMPOSITION, the lines of an image will make or break the photograph.  My favorite is strong diagonal lines, but the subject and background must work well together.

Isaac and Sandra,

Gosh, the wedding album is amazing! Every time I look through it (which is now about 20 times) I feel like I’m there again — on that beautifully rainy day in August. The Photos are not only beautiful but artistic and emotional. That’s difficult to achieve! Everyone who looks at them is truly moved.

I absolutely loved working with you - you’re like friends. Because of you, our children and grandkids will feel like they’ve been to our wedding. I love you both!
